In “God’s Not Dead” released in March, the core message is that education is both evil and dangerous and that all answers are contained in the Bible. This is a common theme for fundamentalists, one that does a great deal to keep people uninformed and afraid. I found God’s Not Dead to be the most unbelievable, two-dimensional and downright offensive of all the films I reviewed, descending to the level of self-parody by the second act.
Transitioning between Portland and San Francisco is a tale of two cities: A tale of one city covered in mud and evergreens, another in dust and palm trees. A tale where one city is lauded for its affordability and creativity, and the other overwrought in high rent and career climbers. Its Neverland or the Pirate Ship. Its fog or rain.
This is a long post and I really don’t want to waste your time. Apple fans, you may as well leave now because you’re rusted on, having been rightly lured by the innovative genius of the first couple of iPhone iterations, then wrongly trapped by the kind of blinkered marketing that would make the Marlboro Man tip his hat in respect.
Scotland’s push for independence is driven by a conviction — one not ungrounded in reality — that the British ruling class has blundered through the last couple of decades. The same discontent applies to varying degrees in the United States and, especially, the eurozone. It is, in many ways, a defining feature of our time.
Senate Republicans have no intention of letting this bill pass. Republicans have no intention of ever letting a constitutional amendment be ratified. What this vote today proves is the power of the issue. Senate Republicans don’t want to be publicly linked to the Koch brothers before an election. The Kochs are toxic, and Republicans are trying to trick voters into ignoring the right-wing billionaire dollars that are trying to buy the government.
refusing to rise and repeat the Pledge is more patriotic and respectful of the godless, secular constitution that created this nation, than rising and declaring our nation to be ‘one nation under god.’
Burning Man was founded in ‘86, the same year as the Pledge, and the first Burning Man had 20 people at it, and our first Center-Right Meeting—the Wednesday Meeting—also had 20 people. So I think there’s a real kinship there
They’re going to be suffering out there,” she said. “That part of the story is more important in a way because they’re already dealing with such a drought that this is just going make the drought and the fires and everything much worse, while in the east it’s just going to be a nice couple of cool days to break up the hot summer.
Mr. President, there’s still time for you to get in line. But if you continue to fulfill the duties of President of the United States that are expressly permitted in the Constitution, you are playing with fire.
After witnessing Republican after Republican stand on the side of Cliven Bundy and armed militias cheering their armed sedition as champions of liberty against the federal government, the sheriff probably knew that asking for assistance from Republican state leaders was a futile exercise.
The problem, in other words, isn’t ignorance; it’s wishful thinking. Confronted with a conflict between evidence and what they want to believe for political and/or religious reasons, many people reject the evidence. And knowing more about the issues widens the divide, because the well informed have a clearer view of which evidence they need to reject to sustain their belief system.
Gothard, a prominent champion of Christian home-schooling, has decried the evils of dating, rock music, and Cabbage Patch dolls; claimed public education teaches children “how to commit suicide” and undermines spirituality; contended that mental illness is merely “varying degrees of irresponsibility”; and urged wives to “submit to the leadership” of their husbands.
The joke is on the right-wing viewers who thought they were being represented by Fox News. Murdoch donates to Clintons, who win elections, allowing Fox News to pretend like they are fighting against the “liberalism” that their boss is funding. Think of it this way, every Republican who watching Fox News is actually working against their own interests and helping to elect the Clintons.
The nightmare scenario, of course, is that Ginsburg stays on for the entirety of Obama’s second term, but finds herself unable to hold on throughout a four or eight-year Ted Cruz or Rand Paul administration, leaving a space on the court wide-open for the GOP to nominate Janice Roger Brown or, if it’s possible, someone even worse.
Obama: they actually voted to give another massive tax cut to the wealthiest Americans.
Audience: Booo –
Obama: Don’t boo, by the way. I want you to vote.
the long-term political effects of a successful Clinton health care bill will be even worse—much worse. It will relegitimize middle-class dependence for “security” on government spending and regulation. It will revive the reputation of the party that spends and regulates, the Democrats, as the generous protector of middle-class interests. And it will at the same time strike a punishing blow against Republican claims to defend the middle class by restraining government.
But a firm conviction that the government can’t do anything useful — a dogmatic belief in public-sector incompetence — is now a central part of American conservatism, and the incompetence dogma has evidently made rational analysis of policy issues impossible.
Mayfield, vice chairman of the Mississippi Tea Party, and is one of the three men charged with conspiring with Clayton Kelly to photograph U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran’s bedridden wife in her nursing home and create a political video against Cochran.
The two cities in the nation with the highest rate of job growth by small businesses are San Francisco and Seattle. Guess which cities have the highest minimum wage? San Francisco and Seattle. The fastest-growing big city in America? Seattle. Fifteen dollars isn’t a risky untried policy for us. It’s doubling down on the strategy that’s already allowing our city to kick your city’s ass.
Instead of fighting President Obama to keep an abomination to international law open, Congress should do the right thing and appropriate the funds to close down the prison at Guantanamo Bay once and for all.
